Canterbury at TTU Heads on Civil Rights Pilgrimage on Saturday, March 9

On Saturday, March 9, nineteen Canterburians from Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry at Texas Tech will be traveling to Tennessee and Alabama for our spring break retreat. Our retreat will be a civil rights tour of the south and will not only include trips to Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery, Hayneville, and Selma, but will also include ample time for reflection on our participation in the systemic sin of racism. Please pray for us as we travel.

 

If you would like to follow along with us on our trip, this is what we are doing each day:

 

• Day 1 – Saturday, March 9: Drive to Little Rock, AR

• Spiritual Theme - Mindfulness: Learning to See and Listen

• Day 2 – Sunday, March 10: Drive to Sewanee, TN via Memphis, TN 

• Visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis

• Spiritual Theme: Making Space in Our Hearts

•  Day 3 – Monday, March 11: Reflection Day in Sewanee, TN

• Spiritual Theme: Thinking Theological about Racism as Sin

• Day 4 – Tuesday, March 12: Trip to Birmingham, AL

• Visit Kelly Ingram Park, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church

• Spiritual Theme: Learning to Tell the Truth

• Day 5 – Wednesday, March 13: Reflection Day in Sewanee

• Spiritual Theme: Proclaiming the Dream of the Beloved Community

• Day 6 – Thursday, March 14: Trip to Nashville, TN

• Spiritual Theme: Practicing Jesus’ Way of Healing Love

• Day 7 – Friday, March 15: Reflection Day in Sewanee, TN

• Spiritual Theme: Seeking Justice: Anti-Racism and the Mission of the Church

   

• Day 8 – Saturday, March 16: Drive to Jackson, MS (via Montgomery, Hayneville, & Selma, AL)

• Visit the Civil Rights Memorial Center, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, the site where Jonathan Daniels died in Hayneville, AL, and Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma

• Spiritual Theme: Celebrating the Saints Who Fought For Justice

• Day 9 – Sunday, March 17: Drive Home

• Spiritual Theme: Becoming Beloved Community
