Statement from Bishop Scott Mayer Concerning Good Shepherd, San Angelo

Diocesan News

Bishop Scott Mayer September 03, 2021

In November 2006, the vestry of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in San Angelo voted to withdraw from The Episcopal Church and align with the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), causing the church to split. The breakaway group, though no longer affiliated with the Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas, maintained control of the church property.  In March 2007, the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas began litigation to reclaim the property.

After more than fifteen years, litigation over the property has ended.  Throughout this difficult process, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd turned their energy to the work of the church.  Their faithful work has continued to be an inspiration to us all.  Having come through this hardship, they know their identity and purpose, as they proclaim God’s love to all people.

I would like to thank the people of Good Shepherd who witness to all of us as they have demonstrated what it means to be the church in the most difficult of times.  I would also like to thank our Diocesan Chancellor Tom Choate and our attorneys Jim Hund and Guy Choate who served us well as attorneys for the litigation.  Finally, I would like to thank Good Shepherd’s reactor, the Rev. Celia Ellery, for her leadership, presence, and pastoral care throughout the past fifteen years.
